“Are you ready for your test?” That was the question the 5th grade teacher asked the class. The classroom erupted with sounds of moans and groans over the surprise quiz that awaited them. “This isn’t fair” was the most popular response echoed by many. Wasn’t the students’ response much like the world we live in today? It just isn’t fair. But then isn’t “fair” often in the eye of the beholder?
I recently had a special treat to hear one of my favorite basketball coaches in person, presenting a brief talk about life. Now that is one big topic! I would categorize his speech as one of those “call to action” talks intended to motivate you about becoming your best. The highlight of that morning, that piece of wisdom that stuck with me for days after his talk was completed, was when he posed the question: When is the last time you reflected on God’s plan for your life? His question led me to consider on how often my focus is on my external life rather than the eternal life that has been promised to me.
People we are reactive beings, so for every action, there is a reaction. We are not generally inclined to pause, reflect and take inventory of our lives. We strive for success and measure our success against others, while often competing for titles and riches. Our Achilles heel of life remains our pride and ego. Isn’t it amazing how often our prayers get answered only to have us boast about our individual success? See, in this life that we are blessed to experience, I think God gives us a test every day and He watches how we approach the test He has given each of us. God also seems to have a most interesting sense of humor in giving us the same test until we get it right. So how are we able to pass the test the first time around? I am disappointed to have to tell you that, most of the time, we don’t. I think Adam and Eve saw to that. Yet through the grace of God who sent his Son Jesus, we have been given the answers to the test. God gave us access to His “open book.” The Bible remains the greatest “textbook” ever written.
The Great Teacher who walked this earth for three decades taking on the flesh of man has given us all the answers to the tests we are about to face. One thing we can be certain of is the next test is coming – I can promise you that. You will never run out of things to worry about, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. Search your heart for His answers – remember: it’s how you finish the test that matters.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
