We can learn much from reading or listening to a story. Why do we often find value and purpose when we hear a story for the first time? I believe a simple explanation may be that we see ourselves as part of the story. We take on the role of the main character or maybe we question the outcome, knowing we would have chosen a different ending. Stories touch our “memory banks,” they stir our emotions and have us relate. Today, I have a somewhat humorous story to share with a purposeful message to consider.
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day, he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, hungry with his body and mind becoming weaker by the day, he realized that he needed to focus on what was critical – survival. Over the next few days he managed to build a small hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements and to store what few possessions he retained from the wreck. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke billowing up to the sky. His heart sank. What little he owned was gone and he now lacked safety and protection. Stunned and with disbelief for his fate he cried out, “God! How could you do this to me?” Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island. It had come to rescue him! ‘How did you know I was here,’ asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal”, they replied.
Stories can teach us much. Jesus loved telling stories, stories that still today provide guidance for you and I. What moral can we learn from this short story? One thought might be that God is always in control and at work in our lives, even in down times, times of pain and anguish. Another moral might be that God’s power works best when we are at our weakest point, a point where surrendering to Him is all that is left. Remember, the next time your “little hut” in life seems to be burning to the ground, it just might be a signal that summons the Grace of God.
