Have you ever noticed how dogs have a way of being in the news? Deeds of heroism, service, and friendship are consistently front page news. These wonderful animals have often taught their owners much about life. Regardless of age, breed or gender, dogs set out in life with one purpose – to serve their master. As humans, I have a feeling we have much we can learn from our four legged friends. Having been a dog owner for over 30 years and currently dog-less, I would like to share some insights.
Dogs live for and in the moment; they don’t regret yesterday or worry about tomorrow. They trust that their master will provide. Hasn’t our Heavenly Father and Master told us the same? If dogs could speak (as some of you believe), I think they might recite Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Dogs don’t hold grudges, they must have been created to teach us about forgiveness. The gleam in a dog’s eyes tells you the message of their heart. If your canine friend could instruct, might they say, ‘Remember, the Lord forgives you so that you can forgive others!’ Dogs love to sit and stay; humans – not so much. Some of the happiest times with a dog are in those one on one private moments; the muzzle of the dog in contact with your lap, their eyes dosed off, dreaming of the memories the two of you just created. I believe God loves the exact same relationship with you – one on one private time in prayer.
I think dogs also can give us a few insights on the way to love unconditionally. They have no need to understand diversity, they love children of all ages, from 1 to 99. They love your friends and even the neighbor next door that you haven’t spoken to in three years. Just as our Heavenly Father has taught us through His Word how to live a proper life, dogs often follow the actions of their master. Dogs love you just as you are, regardless of your fame or fortune. They desire to spend more time with you, and welcome you to their side day and night. Wow, that sure sounds a lot like your Heavenly Father, now doesn’t it?
