I was recently talking with a couple of friends who I often spend Saturday mornings with. The conversation wasn’t planned, they seldom are, but something was said that left a jarring impression on my mind: “You know, we don’t start with the end in mind. It starts with the first one.” The first temptation is where our troubles have their beginning.
We all have temptations. Some of us are better at admitting them, but the sobering reality is that God knows them all. Our sinful nature of maybe lying, cheating, adultery – they always begin with the first one. When we read in the news of someone who has embezzled thousands of dollars, it likely started with the first small theft and led to many more over time. The first wrong picture accessed on a computer may lead to a life that ends with a computer filled with sinful lust. That first addiction is the crack in our earthly armor, the crack the devil probes for day and night, hoping to wear us down – the lure of satisfaction without consequence is his favorite line. How can something be so satisfying in the moment, only to become shameful for a lifetime?
The Bible provides strong words about the dangers of the world that we must heed. 2 Peter says, “A man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.” God is also very clear with His instructions found in Deuteronomy: “Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you.” But we do not journey on our “walk of shame” alone. Our hope rests solely in the One who can change our path, who can bring light in our darkness. We find encouragement in the words that David spoke in Psalm 62: “He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”
God is familiar with all your ways. Before a word is spoken, He knows the intent of your heart and mind. Our prayer each morning as we face the challenges of life is “Rescue me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked. Do not grant the wicked their desires, do not let their plans succeed.”
Faith is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come. Have you prepared?
