George was ready for this day to begin. His level of anxiety hadn’t been this high since he was called into the boss’ office 6 months earlier. That appointment he would soon not forget, it was the last time he would see his boss of twelve years. He received the unexpected message that it was time to move on.
Today was a fresh start, for the first time in twelve years, everyone and everything would be new. As George walked the long hallway, he read each sign hoping that the quick directions he received from the reception desk would result in him locating his office. Sure enough, just as promised room 187 was waiting for his arrival with lights on and the door open – a perfect start.
As George unpacked his briefcase and settled in, he was startled when the speaker above his desk began to chime these beautiful notes. Before he could catch the melody, the tune was over. George gave a glance at his watch, wondering if this was an hourly alarm – nope. The start of a new shift? Not the case. The rest of day one was uneventful with no further chimes, so George never gave it a second thought. Tuesday came and went and no angelic hymn was heard by George. That all changed on Wednesday morning, when at 6:45a.m., George was once again greeted with the special melody. The same twelve notes echoed in his office. This time being a veteran of the company for two days, George was going to investigate. George stepped out into the hallway only to see a young lady dressed in a pink dress walking by. “Excuse me, can you tell me what is that music I just heard?” “Sure,” came a quick reply. “Another baby was just born in the hospital. Every time a baby is born we sound the chimes. It announces another miracle!”
As George returned to his office, he couldn’t help but reflect on the birth of his own two children and the joy and blessings they had been. George thought to himself, ‘Never again will I ignore the chime. No matter where I am, or what I am doing, I will pause and pray for the new birth, the parents and child. I will remember to give thanks for the many blessings my family has brought me.’ George had discovered a prayer trigger. From that day forward, when the beautiful chimes announced a birth, George would find himself in a moment of prayer and an inner peace would accompany his prayer and calm his heart.
So what is a prayer trigger? I describe it this way: a sight, sound, or object that you can identify in your life that reminds you to pray. It should be something that occurs in your day on a regular basis and with a degree of frequency.
5 Everyday Things to Trigger Prayer In Your Life
- A bird or animal. Give thanks for all of God’s creations and for this life He has given us.
- Starting your car. Pray for safety and guidance as you travel and go about your day. Give thanks to God for transportation and for all the places it enables you to go. Pray that you can bring God wherever you go.
- Drink of water. Pray for those who do not have access to clean water. Give thanks for the healing and nourishing properties of water.
- Observing the sun or moon. Pray for guidance and safety in starting a new day and give thanks at the end of end of each day.
- A hand shake or hug. Say a prayer for friends and colleagues, new and old, that you come into contact with each day. Give thanks to God for their presence in your life.
The power of prayer remains a mystery. We find boldness when we are confident in knowing that prayer does not depend on the one who offers the prayer, but on the One who hears the prayer. To God be the Glory.
