I am often struck by the fact that we live our lives from one moment to the next. For the sake of our story today, I would define a moment as “a significant event in your life that has a permanent impact on your future.” A game changer! Some special examples that come to mind in my life would be: my wedding day, the birth of my two daughters, and the 9-11 tragedy. Moments in Time, they either add or subtract. They write our story – the story of our life. So what’s my point? What’s the take away message I hope to impart and have you focus on today?
Consider this very day that you are about to experience as a simple example. Yes, this is the day the Lord has made, you can choose to rejoice and show gladness in everything you do – or, you can let today’s events diminish your faith. Pause and be patient when challenges arise. Trust God one day at a time, hour by hour. Consider the time it takes God to grow a tree. That tree started as a small seed, the seed was covered in dirt and darkness, but through God’s power of creation, it now provides shelter for the animals of His kingdom and shade from the hot sun.
You and I must learn to be patient. Our life story is a work in progress and we can find comfort in knowing that God is using today’s difficulties to strengthen you for tomorrow. We find confidence in the words of Psalm 139: “O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.”
So how many Moments in Time are you likely to experience today? Your quick response may be to say “None,” but I want to challenge this. You might not be getting married today, changing jobs or moving into a new home, but if we assume today will just be another routine, ho-hum day, we can get in the habit of approaching life this way and we limit our potential impact – our impact on other people. What if we stopped focusing just on ourselves and considered how we could create Moments for others? What if you set out each day with the goal of creating a Moment for someone else? Wouldn’t our lives be filled with greater joy if we were impacting family, friends and those we don’t yet know with seeds of the gospel, the seeds of salvation?
God’s timing is perfect; He is never late and never too early. Even when life is not going according to your plan, God is working and has a plan for you today, tomorrow and for the rest of your life.
