Celebrating a Successful VBS 2018
Jun 29, 2018
When it's Vacation Bible School (VBS) time at HCL, there's an indescribable energy buzzing through the church. Children come excited to play, to sing and to learn about the friend they have in Jesus. This year, HCL's Children's Ministry and over 200 gracious youth and adult volunteers transformed the church into a tropical oasis for "Shipwrecked" VBS. Throughout the week, nearly 450 children participated in wacky experiments, interactive dramas and Bible learning activities where they survived and thrived on an uncharted island, anchored in the truth that Jesus carries them through life's storms.
VBS, which is held in June each year to kick off summer, started Monday, June 18th and lasted until Friday, June 22nd. For the first time, children participated in mixed age crews made up of children of a variety of ages. The team decided to "mix things up" this year to to encourage teamwork rather than competitions, highlight the unique contribution of each age level in a crew, and encourage new relationship-building within the Body of Christ. Throughout the week, children enjoyed team building games, lively Bible songs, and other engaging activities. Each day started and ended in the Sanctuary for large group sessions of singing, dancing and worship and, for many, this is where the real magic happened: "So, so many staff members as well as parents commented on how moving it was to see the kids worshipping during large group," said Director of Children's Ministry Rachel Stathakis. "Such pure, untainted faith! Belting out the songs, praying so passionately, listening intently."
VBS week also included an offering in which children were encouraged to be the hands and feet of Jesus by bringing in donations to support a community organization. For the second year in row, donations were gathered for Hope Street Ministry, a self-proclaimed "Greenhouse for People" that helps men, women and children in need to get back on their feet and to grow together in their relationship with Jesus. In addition to faith building, VBS teaches children to give back and share the love of Jesus with others and share they did: "The kids brought in cleaning supplies throughout the week," Stathakis said. "An entire carload of cleaning supplies was delivered to Hope Street."
On behalf of everyone at HCL, thank you to all of the faithful volunteers and dynamic Children's Ministry team members who helped make VBS week a fun and impactful experience learning about Jesus. God shines through you!
