  • Our latest Message emphasis is Common Grounds - running from July 20 to September 7.

Acts 17.  The Apostle Paul (one of the early and most influential followers of Jesus) went into the Areopagus in Athens.  This was a place where philosophers got together and debated truth and the latest ideas.  At first Paul noticed that there were false gods worshiped all over the city and it really ticked him off…they had so many that there was even an altar set up to an “unknown god”…just to make sure they had their bases covered.  Paul could have “slammed” these people for not following the right God.  Instead he looked for common ground and built a bridge in a sense to them.  He commended them that they were very religious.  And he used this as an opportunity to share about the “unknown god” with them: Jesus.

Paul’s approach is what we are going to be doing over the course of our next worship series.  Just as in Paul’s day, the culture is often very “religious”, but they don’t necessarily understand truth from a Biblical perspective.  We could slam the culture.  Instead we are going to build on common ground, and then fill in the empty spaces.  Each week we will look at a philosophical quote, interestingly enough taken from the side of a Starbucks coffee cup.  This is an example of a modern day Areopagus (there are others: books, universities, TV, etc.).  And we will engage in a conversation with it, and learn how to lead the culture to the God that they do not yet fully know.

To continue with the weekly message's topic and to add your thoughts or comments, there is a blog set up for this series.
