This list provides suggestions for where you may find opportunities to serve others in the Community outside Hales Corners Lutheran.  Opportunities can be found in all communities.  If you would like an opportunity added to this list or have questions, please call wayne at 529-6700.   

Southwest Interfaith is a neighborhood outreach program committed to enhancing the quality of life for older adults.  There are opportunities to serve in the following areas:  friendly visiting, telephone reassurance calling, Rides to appointments or shopping, assistance with paperwork or minor home chores.  The neighborhood director is Diane May.  Call her at 421-3777 to help.

Hope House is a shelter for homeless families and individuals as well as a community house and food pantry for local residents. (near South side)

Opportunities to cook and serve meals to the ten resident families on weekends exist for small groups.  This is a great chance to help a lessfortunate family and enjoy some fellowship.

After School Tutoring, an after school tutoring program every school day from 3-6pm. help the students with homework, read a book with them, or work on other academic skills.

Shining Stars Summer Program - allows kids from the shelter and the neighborhood experience their community through various field trips and service opportunities.

Food Pantry - The United Southside Food Panty - stocking shelves, bagging food, and distributing the food to our neighbors.

Adult Education Tutoring - helping adult students in their GED training,  times are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5-8pm.

Friday Class/Club Leader - June 25-August 17 - Fridays 9:30 to 11:30 am.

lead children's small groups in gardening, building, editing Summer magazine.

Journey House  has opportunities for you to help in their Adult Learning Center and in the Youth center.  Located on the South side of Milwaukee

Tutor program participants at Gethsemane Lutheran in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program.  Two hours per week for a six week period.  Times each week are very flexible.  Great opportunity to serve on the South side.     call Beth  414-873-0611

Interfaith     Opportunity to help with yard work for Good Neighbor Project. Meal Programs at the Gathering provides ten free meals each week at three sites to over 100,000 of Milwaukee's hungry and homeless annually.

This work is done by hundreds of volunteers.

Outlook Café Volunteer at The Lutheran Home

This opportunity is great for a husband and wife, a couple of friends or a family with school age children.        Choice of Monday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday  1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Set up café for service.  Serve ice cream and refreshments to residents and their families.

Shut down café after service.  Commitment to serving a minimum of 1 day per week.

Adopt a Sunday" Chapel Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

This is a perfect opportunity for groups, families and individuals.           Sunday  9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.   Transport residents to the chapel from their rooms.  Enjoy the LCMS service with residents.  Return residents to their rooms.   Commitment to serving a minimum 1 Sunday per month.         Bingo Volunteers  The Lutheran Home                                                           Help our residents enjoy one of their favorite pastimes.  Choice of Monday and/or Friday.  1:00 p.m.  - 3:00 p.m.  Transport residents to Bingo.  Assist residents in hearing the numbers or placing their chips.  Transport residents back to their rooms.  Commitment to serving a minimum of 1 day per week.

Recreational Outings Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

Our residents take trips monthly. Shopping, museums, luncheons, ballgames, bowling, scenic rides and more! This opportunity is terrific for groups. Individuals always welcome!

Schedule changes monthly, flexible Usually between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 pm

Transport residents from their rooms and help load the bus.  Enjoy the outing with residents.  Transport residents back to their rooms.

Financial Services Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

Great for anyone who enjoys office work and wants to be a part of a team.

Any day, Monday - Friday  8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Assist financial services with filing and other small projects.        Requirements:   Commitment to serving one 8 hour day per week.  Basic office skills, including filing are a plus.

Medical Records Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

Great for anyone who enjoys office work and wants to be a part of a team.

Any day, Monday - Friday  Any time between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Assist medical records with filing and other small projects.  2 hrs every week

Nutritional Services Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

Visit residents and serve an important purpose.

Flexible  Any time between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Usually 2-3 hours)

Review menus with residents who have special dietary needs.

Submit information to the dietitian for review.  Commitment to serving 1 day per week.

Ability to read the menu out loud and note the resident's preferences.  Comfort with one on one interaction with residents.

Community Partner  The Lutheran Home

Great for someone with a special skill to share.

Time and day are flexible   Work with our staff to create a small group activity based on your skills, interests and hobbies. Commitment to serving 1 day per week.  Natural leadership skills.  Comfort with one on one interaction with residents.

Recreational Activities Volunteer  The Lutheran Home

We have tons of great activities on a daily basis. Exercise classes, music classes, bible study, concerts, clubs, dinners and more!

Schedule changes monthly, flexible  Usually Activities last 2-3 hours.

Transport residents from their rooms to the activity.  Assist residents and staff with the activity. Transport residents back to their rooms.

Lutheran Home Ladies Auxiliary  The Lutheran Home

A group of Christian women with 100 years of service to the Lutheran Home.  Meetings 1st Tuesday of the Month, other days as scheduled. 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.  The Ladies Auxiliary raises money to support the needs of the residents.  Major purchases include the Lutheran Home Bus and our chapel's sound system. Annual events include the kickoff luncheon, rummage, Christmas coffee and annual outing.  The Auxiliary sponsors resident events such as the monthly birthday party and the Christmas tea.

A Place of Refuge offers opportunities to volunteer in several areas.  The Refuge House, the Blessed Again Resale shop, answering the hot line from your home and mentoring pregnant women provide many opportunities to make a difference.  Please call Trish at 414-438-2767.

Sojourner Truth House.

Several areas relating to domestic violence and abuse can use additional people.  Commit to 3 hrs per week for 6 months. The 17 hr training begins Sept 12.  If interested, call Melinda at 414-933-2722 by Sept 4.

Habitat for Humanity

Skilled electricians, plumbers and carpenters are always needed.  Occasional orientation and work days are set up for new volunteer individuals and groups.  Volunteers work all year round. 

Several special building weeks are held each year.  During Blitz Week (May), new houses are framed by volunteers working Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00.  During our annual House Raising Week (June) and Building on Faith Week (September), volunteers provide framing teams and work on other projects.

We are looking for volunteers to help us out in many different ways -- including to make pickups of donations for the ReStore. These individuals should have good driving records, be able to lift 50 to 100 pounds, be comfortable driving a truck with a trailor and be able to read a map. Milwaukee Rescue Mission  (Groups or individuals)

Christmas celebration will be held over the lunch hour on December 23rd this year.  We also need help serving supper from 4-6 p.m. on December 24th , 25th , and 26th.  If you and your family are able to help serve one of these meals, please call  (414) 935-0241 on December 1st.   I will again be filling the volunteer needs on a first call basis beginning December 1st at 12:01 a.m.

The Joy House is the Milwaukee Rescue Mission shelter for homeless women and their children, is in need of volunteers to help with children's programs throughout the week.
